Update April 5: As part of the rebuild project, school administrators will be looking for input from students, parents/guardians and staff about what Raleigh Hills represents to the community now and in the future. The reimagining will include a new mission statement and possibly a new mascot and new school colors, depending on community feedback.

Original Project: Raleigh Hills Elementary School dates back to 1927, making it the second oldest school in the district. The steam pipes are failing, the roof is in poor condition and the sanitary waste system is not adequate for the size of the school. In addition, much of the building does not meet current seismic standards and is at risk of partial or full collapse in the event of an earthquake. The new building will address all of those issues.

The rebuild is being funded through the 2014 and 2022 Bond. The new school will be home to pre-K through 5th grade classes. Once rebuilt, it will offer a more spacious, functional and modern educational environment. Demolition is scheduled to start in summer 2024, and the rebuilt school will open in fall 2026. During the rebuild, students will attend Greenway Elementary School.

Periodically, we'll be posting below to get your feedback on design decisions. Please follow this project (top of page, right side), so you're alerted to those opportunities.

How many kids do you estimate the new school will be able to handle?

Rachelle Vanderzanden asked 21 days ago

The capacity of the new school is 770 students: 750 students from grade K-5 and one pre-K classroom with a capacity of 20. The pre-K program has separate morning and afternoon classes, (each serving up to 20 students), so the actual number of students served would be 790.

Thank you for your question. Determining future plans for the new Raleigh Hills Elementary School is the first task of the newly-formed, citizen Facilities Planning Committee. (Openings were previously advertised in ParentSquare posts, on the district website and on the district's social media in November.) The committee has had one meeting. Future meeting dates are being determined and will be posted here: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/long-range-planning/facilities-planning-committee

Yes, we will be publicizing opportunities before demolition.

No decisions have been made regarding a possible re-boundary process for Raleigh Hills. If the District does explore that option, it would be a longer process with considerable community input. However, the rebranding of Raleigh Hills (mascot, colors) is a more immediate project.

There was a community room on the original plans for the new building, but that had to be changed due to budget constraints. Currently, there is no dedicated space for the Clothes Closet in the new building. However, the principal is aware of this request and hopes to find a solution, even if that means using a smaller space than the school has right now. In the meantime, we'd strongly encourage you to use the district Clothes for Kids resource. This summer, we'll be moving C4K to a larger portable at the old district office location (SW Merlo Road) so that we can serve even more families.

Thank you for your question. The district is continually looking at boundary lines and making decisions the ensure the best educational experience for all our students.

Use of district facilities by community users is permitted consistent with the requirements specified by the District’s Facility Use process: https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/departments/long-range-planning/facility-use

Yes, this project will be registered with BOLI. The solicitation for the contractor on this project includes a goal that 10% of the project labor hours should be performed by state registered apprentices. Over the course of the 2014 Bond, we ended up being at 19%. Additionally, we'll be working with the in-district CTE programs to offer internships during this bond.

TheGloriusLeader asked over 1 year ago

The max student capacity will be 790 students. The entire school, including the library, will be demolished. We're looking for ways to incorporate features from the old building — like the brickwork — in the new school.
