Beaverton High School is the oldest school in the district, dating back to 1916. Over the years, more than a dozen separate additions have been made to the school, resulting in an assortment of electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems and related inefficiencies. Parts of the building do not have firewalls, and much of the building does not meet current seismic standards. It's the only high school in the district with a seismic rating below "Collapse Prevention," meaning in the event of an earthquake, Beaverton High School would be at risk of partial or full collapse. The new structure will serve as a community evacuation center in case of an earthquake.

The complete rebuild of Beaverton High School will be the largest project in the 2022 Bond at a cost of $253 million. Because there is no viable swing school, students will attend school on site during construction. The new building will be located on the grass field along SW Farmington Road. Once the new school is completed, the old one will be torn down and replaced with a parking lot.

Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2024. The rebuilt school is slated to open in the fall 2026 and would accommodate about 1,500 students.

Periodically, we'll be posting below to get your feedback on design decisions. Please follow this project (top of page, right side), so you're alerted to those opportunities.

  • Share I've got a question for the rebuild team. How are you currently intending to honor the tradition and history of Beaverton High School (Merle Davies) within the design and construction of the new school? As I'm sure you are aware, tradition unites the Beaverton community especially when it comes to landmarks like BHS and the impact it has had on generations in the community. If you are open to some ideas, I'd love to chat with the appropriate team about how we might pay tribute to tradition, history and how we can rally positive support from the community. The history of the building is being honored in several ways including:

A 50-foot history wall featured prominently in the hallway outside of the main office that honors the history of Beaverton High School through several curated displays led by the BHS Representative Art and Visual Expression’s (BRAVE) historical sub-committee.

The committee helps the district incorporate art, wayfinding and history into the new building. BRAVE will advise the design team in the selection, placement and procurement of artwork, graphics, historical and other types of visual expression or imagery. We invite to learn more by watching this video

Here’s a list of salvaged items:

    • Lockers

    • Merle Davies wood flooring, windows and cornerstone

    • Auditorium seats and wood paneling

    • Gym flooring, banners and display case millwork

    • BHS crest and monument sign

We would be happy to connect you with our sub-committee lead on the process for further questions or feedback. Email Gabby_Urenda@beaverton.k12.or.us

The district is coordinating with school staff to hold building tours for alumni in spring of 2026.

Before then, alumni can attend the groundbreaking of the new Beaverton High School on Friday, April 12, starting at 3:30 p.m. The event will feature a first-hand look at construction, an opportunity to ask questions and there will be cookies and refreshments available.

There will also be an opportunity for attendees to leave with a brick from Merle Davies and a commemorative coin, as supplies last.

There are no viable alternative locations.

The construction team is aware of the noise concerns and will try to mitigate issues during school hours. Also, staff will ensure that all students know where to go when classes are relocated to portables.

The rebuild of BHS is fully funded by the bond that was approved by voters in May 2022.

  • Share Can you guys include a prayer room in the new building for Muslim students whose time of prayer falls during school hours? In the old building, Muslim students had to pray in the United Nations room because they had no prayer room. Also, a pair of restrooms (one for men and one for women) with a few stations for ablution (wudu) would make things much easier and accessible for the Muslim community at BHS. on Facebook Share Can you guys include a prayer room in the new building for Muslim students whose time of prayer falls during school hours? Thank you for your question. Yes, we currently have dedicated “reflection” rooms which can be used for prayer in the design. Each has a dedicated sink for washing.
